Is God a Happy Father at the Birth of His Son Jesus?

Is God a Happy Father at the Birth of His Son Jesus?

Over the years I watched curiously contented faces of many new fathers as they gaze in astonishment and wonder at their newly born first child.  It is as if they were saying: “I can’t believe this beautifully amazing little ball of life is really mine!”

Thinking of this special moment, I wondered what were God the Father’s thoughts as he gazed upon Jesus when he was born into our world?  I imagine God the Father mixed humble pride with abundant happiness at the first sight of his son in Mary’s arms.  I am sure if he had cigars, he would appropriately have passed them around just to show his deep joy.

As a loving and ecstatic father, he is grateful that Mary said the yes bringing him this beautiful son.  Next, he glances appreciatively at Joseph, admiring profoundly his abundant generosity.  Didn’t Joseph set aside his life-dream with Mary to teach and protect his son’s humanity?  Once Mary and Joseph said yes, they never counted the cost.  They simply made room for Jesus and gave him what he needed to become the world’s savior.

God then admired the kneeling shepherds who hastily left their flocks alone at night to see his cheerful newborn.  Hearing the angelic heavenly hosts breaking into a harmonious majestic melody, God beamed with delight.  God approved that his heavenly residents equally agreed as to the wonder of his son’s birth.

Staring down at his son sleeping peacefully in his manger crib surrounded by such an exultant crowd, Jesus’ father suddenly saw the impending Calvary scene.  For a brief moment, he felt his son’s horror even from that faraway sight.

But on that first Christmas morn, he savored the moment. Indeed, he has a beautiful son, a tiny babe, who comes with the saving power of love and mercy in whom his father is well pleased.  And why wouldn’t his father be?  Jesus is the gift of salvation for all his creation.  God the Father’s son, Jesus, is the reason we all can shout with glee:

“Merry Christmas everyone!”
