How Often Do We Use the Phrase, Time Flies?
Lately, I’ve gotten into the habit of saying this phrase as my preferred excuse for procrastination. For instance, when I have something to do, and waste my time not doing it, “My how time flies!” becomes my favorite scapegoat phrase.
We do this frequently when it applies to spiritual things. Some examples come to mind, such as: when our prayer life slackens, or our patience level crumbles, or judging others becomes more constant. We brush cures aside like Scarlett O’Hara saying, “I can’t think about that now. I’ll think about it tomorrow.”
Instead of stopping and reviewing, this experience may easily reveal an insightful and desired meaning. This something can be exactly the valuable piece necessary for future growth.
Why? The Holy Spirit communicates God’s daily messages though these present moments in our lives. We discover God’s will when we linger prayerfully over these little acts that cross our path. These extended extra minutes can easily bring needed and helpful breakthroughs.
Finding God within the present moment of our lives reminds us of how close God is and that he does not hide secluded in a foreign galaxy. Our challenge is to seek this present God and make sense of his message. If we truly seek God in this present moment, our eternity begins with each step.
To gain the insight needed now, we need to scatter our dark clouds by remembering that God loves who I am right now and not who I did not become yesterday. And then I can honestly embrace who I am now, and not mourn who I never became. To meet God in a present moment, it is helpful that we keep our life in that moment, that event, and that experience and not in any other.
Remember that most believers live and do ordinary things. We get up at the same time, take the same route to work, have the same breakfast, and greet the same people along the way. We even follow the same ordinary routine when arriving.
However, Saint Francis de Sales is tireless in reminding us of the magic of each present moment and of the opportunity given to raise a moment of praise to God. Imagine our powerful, almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, delighted to be in the nooks and crannies of our lives! In responding, we need to be aware and attentive. These moments take commitment and determination, but they can be done. There’s always time enough when living attentively! It’s all about paying attention!
