A Moment From De Sales

The Power of Kindness

“Never underestimate the power of a kind word or action” reminded my Mother when I was reluctant to write thank you notes for my wonderful birthday presents.  Well, I did and have remembered to do so ever since. But my Mother’s  little reminder is a great  maxim to begin each new day.   We should never underestimate the power of kindness in any shape or form.  St Francis de Sales says it another way: “ If we err, do so on the side of gentleness.” Either one of these expressions says we don’t have to yell, stamp our feet or swing our arms madly in the air to get things done.   Each suggests we stop, look into the eyes of another person and see a person like ourselves.

We can all become fragile and cranky at times or even mean if pushed, but even in these times we are always loved the same by Jesus.  He doesn’t measure us by  our weakness , but only by God’s image of which we are created.  Jesus always extends to us “ the power of a kind word or action.”   If he can do it on a regular basis he desires that we do the same.   As Jesus’ love for us is healing, we can be healing for another through our kindness.

Each day then, smile at another, hold doors if you can, greet them as you enter a room,  be courteous on the road.  Above all , write your “Thank You” notes for the power of  these small acts will pour the great power of God’s love abundantly into your present moment.
